Description
The notion that Halloween is somehow a satanic, or even pagan celebration originated by a small group of Druids nearly 2000 years ago under the name “Vigil of Samhain,” is a mistake.
It is a well documented historical fact, that Hallowe’en, and all of its traditions, were originated by the Early Church as the second most important holy day in the Christian calendar, and the Memorial Day of the Christian Church.
Even if this were not so, the notion that we unknowingly become Satan worshippers whenever we use symbols that someone else may have used thousands of years ago in some pagan ceremony, is a mistake.
It is the very definition of symbols that they are symbolic. That though they may symbolize good or evil things, they themselves are neither good nor evil. And, that the meaning of any symbol is clearly in the eye of the beholder. Scripture is clear that God judges the intent of the heart, not the outward appearance. In other words, it’s not what a symbol means that makes us good or evil, but what we mean by the symbol. A Christian could no more accidentally worship Satan, than a Satanist could accidentally worship Jesus.
In our rush to cleanse ourselves of all things evil, we have inadvertently thrown out the baby with the bath water. Because we no longer celebrate it, the heritage and sacrifice of the Early Church are no longer revered, or even remembered by our children. Foxe’s Book of Martyrs is unread, and largely unknown. And perhaps most tragic of all, the examples of conviction and the faith of the millions of Christians who were horribly tortured and killed because they refused to recant the name of Jesus, are both insignificant and alien to us.
If we must see a satanic conspiracy in our calendars, surely we need look no further than this.
